Rear tires with more traction

I remember my uncle who raised me picking up scrap mowers all the time. One of them was a 5HP B&S and manual transmission like you describe. That thing operated good until you hit any kind of minor incline.

He also picked up an 8HP snapper rear engine rider and that thing was like a little bulldog. It was too bad the deck was in pretty bad shape so he had it hauled for junk.

With your tire situation maybe an ATV tread type tire would work best for you.
 
Another option just came to mind... What about adding tire chains. I did that to a rider years ago for winter use and ended up leaving the chains on and it did not tear up the yard when mowing as I recall.
 
I actually thought about that. I have some tires cables from a corolla that my wife drove. For 13" tires. Once again, the cables are here and the Huskie is 120 miles away.
