problems with blade engaging??

I have a craftsman model 917.273811. when i try to engage the cutting deck, it doesn't want to engage. after a few stiff kicks to the side of the deck, it engages but seems to stall down too easy when in tough grass. what can i look for???:confused2:
 
First check the belt. remember, your belt pulls on the edges. If that doesn't do it, I would check the idler pullies. One miight be locking up on you.
