I have a 1995 series snapper 33 inch rider. I am in the process of replacing the axle boots. I am having a proble with the left side axle bearing. There is some kind of lock ring holding the axle in. It interfaces with the bearing on that side. There is a set screw in the ring which I did mangage to loosen pretthy easily, but the ring will not slide off. I tried pb blaster and heat and even tried a little puller to no avail. I could cut it off, but cannot find a similar part anywhere.

That sounds very much like a self aligning bearing in which case it may lock with a twist.
A photo would be most helpful.

I think Bert is correct. You probably need to turn that collar 90-180 degrees to unlock it. I'm not sure which direction though.

There is a guy on Youtube that has a ton of perfect Snapper axle boot type videos. Jim Jackson is his name. Do a Youtube search for him. You will see a wealth of videos he has made. Here you go.
