I have a chance to buy a HR215 SXA in excellent condition. I have only talked to the owner on the phone (have not see the HR215 in person yet). The seller is the original owner and he has maintained the lawn mower religiously and always garage kept. My question is (to the Honda Guru's) is this HR215 worth the asking price of $200? I have attached pictures.

The engine alone if it is not blowing smoke is worth more than $ 200.

I will be traveling (50 miles) to inspect the lawn mower in person and then determine its condition in person on Saturday.

One more question. I know the current commercial GXV160 series engines have a cast iron cylinder. Does the GXV140 engines also have a cast iron cylinder?

Yes, and they hold up very well. Mine was smoking and taking oil last year, so tore it down, and found less than 2/1000 wear in the bore - honed it, fed it stock rings, and it was as good as new again. Not bad for 30 years or so of Texas use! GXV160 is nothing more than an overbored 140 - most parts even interchange . . .

Well fellas, I bought a package deal from the original owner. The HR215 SX (mentioned above) and a HR214 SX, both for $220. The HR215 (GXV140 engine) run clean and the HR214 (GXV120 engine) runs rich. I believe I got a pretty good deal. Here are some pictures while still in my truck bed.

Tadawson, did you replace the piston too?

No need - it was not scuffed, and fully in spec. I changed all oil seals, rings, and did a light hone - everything else met specs as it was. Compression was good, and valves looked good as well, so also left those. Oh, and I did add the rubber intake valve stem seal that was added to later GXV140's - the head did not change, they just added the seal, and it fit fine.

You got yourself a great deal on the Hondas. My youngest son has HR215SXA that I purchased new in 1990, still runs & performs well.
