Bought in hasn't run in a couple years.

Cleaned carb- had to run valve lash to get it to crank- no fire installed new coil- changed oil and filter- new plug.

Fires right up but it backfires or pops thru the carb and sometimes out the exhaust. Ran valves again they were spot on. Checked key on flywheel which looked good. Still pops.

Cleaned carb again because plug is showing white on it like its lean. Checked fuel pump which works great. Changed fuel filter again. Still pops.

Pulled head thinking maybe something wrong with with valves. They looked fine but installed a spare rebuilt head and push rods I had on the shelf. Still pops especially at low speed.

Pulled flywheel again - found small crack in flywheel right by keyway. I think I did that taking it off. Installed spare flywheel and key. Still pops

Plug still shows lean so I pulled carb for a 3rd time and cleaned it again. Noticed the air fuel mix screw doesn't seem to make much of a difference on how it runs so I changed that screw and spring out. Still pops.

Stuck a anti back fire solenoid in that has had the tip cut off just to check and see of maybe it was moving up and down when it was supposed to stay open. ( grasping at straws) still pops!!!!

New head and valves- new flywheel and key - super clean carb- new oil air filter plug and coil and the damn thing just keeps on popping about every 4 or 5 seconds!!!!

Any thoughts would be appreciated

This engine used the 798330 camshaft, notorious for experiencing excessive wear on the Cam lobes that could very well be the cause of your issue. did you check to see that the valves moved the same amount of travel up and down?

Just checked the valves again - lash is right at 5 on both and both valves are opening and closing at the same distance

Have you checked for an intake air leak? Can cause lean running and erratic operation.

As Hammer mention check the o-ring on the intake to head connection. I had one here cause an engine to sneeze at idle speeds last year.
