Popping sound

Was just given a Toro self-propelled mower with a 190 cc briggs motor. Guy said it stopped running while he was mowing. Has compression and spark, makes a popping sound. Checked and the flywheel key is good, not even off a little bit. Could it be the plastic cam lobe moved on the cam shaft? That is my only other thought.

Perform compression test with proper gauge. Remove valve cover and inspect. Try spraying carburetor spray into throat of carburetor and see if it runs for a few seconds.

What Tiger Small engine said, and yes, if it has a plastic cam that can happen. So can a fuel supply failure frpm bad fuel, water in fuel, plugged passage in the carb. I had a edger that did that. Drove me nuts finding the cause. Turned out to be the small fixed pilot jet vibrated loose. Fortunately the local shop had the part for sale.

Well that could be a problem. Have you used the compression tester on anything else? Just trying to find out if it's known good, and you're used to using it.
