My father has ALZ and he put 2 stroke gas in hes push mower. I don't know how long he did that before the motor stopped working but Im just pretty sure the two are contected. I cleaned the carb real good but the motor still struggled start and would only run maybe a few seconds. With the air filter off, I could get it to stay running if I covered the air intake with my hand chocking it. After letting it run that way for maybe 30 seconds, I removed my hand, the motor stalled, and I noticed what appeared to be smoke/exhaust coming out the air intake. I removed the muffler and the motors cranks and seems to run fine. I looked up this muffler it does not have a spark arrestor. Can not find anything online of this type of issue. Will 2 stroke gas clog a muffler? Im oddly worried replacing the muffler will not change anything meaning the new muffler will some how bog it down. What else might be going on?

A four-stroke engine will show smoke using a 2-stroke mix, and also not run well, you may have some carbon build up in the muffler, now that you have it off run some hot water through it see if it comes out. post up the engine numbers so we can see what engine you have.

Its a craftsman with briggs stratton 7.25 163cc motor. All 2stroke gas is out. I've used this mower without the muffler extensively this season, runs fine besides how loud it is. There is also apart of the muffler that controls one of the levers on the carb... but the motor seems to run fine without. Even though its running fine now I'm worried that it could be causing harm decreasing the life of the motor long term...

You will need to put back the muffler even if its going to be a new one, engine will run much better with one, numbers are on the engine cover.

Jpetie you have the EZ Start engine..... You need that muffler on there for the auto choke to work right.... That part from the muffler to the carb is the choke lever..... When the muffler gets warm it moves that arm to open the choke..

If you can't find a muffler I have some of those in stock......

So you think the old muffler was just clogged and nothing else? I’ll drop into my local small engine shop and get this muffler ordered. It’s roughly 35$

Only thing not on the mower is the muffler and the engine cover
