Oil Filter Tightening

Heads up on this.

Guys I have been seeing this issue a lot lately. Oil filters that tighten to one turn per the filter's instructions are becoming loose. Briggs has recommended that these filters are to be tighten to 100 in-lbs or to 8 ft-lbs using a filter fluke wrench.

It is probably the type of rubber used that is causing this problem.

Been seeing this issue on both the Kohler and the Briggs filters over the last few years. And even have had a few that were torqued to the proper Briggs spec to also come loose enough to start leaking. Issue seems to be related to the installation of the sealing ring having oil under it during assembly and later draining causing a loose filter. The slow torquing is suppose to eliminate the oil issue but it has been my experience that it isn't totally a fix.

Just how are you going install a wire on a round smooth surface and not have it to slip.

So far has not been a problem and I do intentionally oil the sealing ring. I done dealt with filter that had oil applied that required me driving a large screwdriver thru the filter to get them off. Messy as heck to do.

Two hands and a grunt and a rag so it doesn’t slip, is how I install oil filters. I also write the date and hours on oil filter. No other shop in my area ever writes the date and hours on filter. Helps the customer with tracking tune up and helps me identify that I have worked on mower and when.

The issue isn't us oiling the sealing ring at install. The issue is the manufacturer using oil to seat the sealing ring onto the filter and part of that oil getting trapped below the ring and coming out later, removing any compression of the sealing ring. But it isn't just lawnmower oil filters having issues. I had an oil filter fail on my tractor a couple years ago. 40 hours after installation that required an additional 1/4 turn with a filter wrench. That filter wasn't even loose by installation standards, but was leaking around the sealing ring that took an additional 1/4 turn to seal. Could it didn't help that at the time of failure it was 6F
 
The problem could be the shape of the threaded base plate and thickness of the sealing gasket. Look at the business end of the oil filter. Is it flat, concave, or convex shaped? With a convex shaped base plate, that base plate may contact the filter mounting flange before the gasket is completely compressed. There's your leak. I've experienced this first hand on Loncin made engines.

@slomo The issue isn't the filter coming loose. The issue is the sealing gasket is loosing its compression due to thermal cycling. So the oil filter is becoming loose without the filter turning.
