oil filter micron rating

I’m thinking of using a Wix 51056 oil filter with a micron rating of 21 instead of the usual Kawasaki 49065-7007 that has a micron rating of 28. The reason for using the Wix is that it has a little bit more height, more capacity. It will be installed on a Kawasaki FR691V engine. Will the difference in micron rating from 28 to 21 pose a problem? Thanks
 
Hello, Kawasaki, as any company, has specifications for a reason. If the engine is out of the factory warranty, use what you want. In warranty, I would stick with OEM parts.
A human hair measures between 50-100 microns. So, is filtering down from 21 to 28 microns going to extend the life of the engine? Not likely.
 
I failed in my question to ask about the difference in the flow rate going from 28 down to 21. I was thinking there might be some oil starvation due to a slower flow rate? I’m getting close to the end of the warranty is why I was thinking I might use a different filter. Thanks
 
Not sure about Wix flow rate. Kawasaki knows what they are doing. If you’ve made it to the end of the warranty, you’re doing better maintenance than most. Good job for that. Either filter will be fine. Following the proper service intervals is the key!

Filter flow rate is not only influenced by micron , it's also influenced by the surface area of the filter eg a filter with a given micron rating, will have a greater flow rate (less overall restriction) than the same filter (micron) with a smaller filter area.

You should also take into consideration - A more efficient filter (smaller micron) will tend to block quicker, than a larger micron filter (again surface area comes into this) so more frequent filter changes may be required.

As a general rule- There is no point in filtering out particles that will have little/no influence on the engine.

keep in mind that many filters also have a bypass mechanism. If the filter can't keep up with the filtration, it will go into bypass mode and then offer no filtration. Oil filters are sort of a voodoo product. Meaning that marketing often is not reality. Watch some of the youtube channels on oil filters and your head will spin.

Does the slight micron difference create an oil restriction? NO! You are overthinking the situation.

Change your filter and use quality oil once per season and quit worrying about armchair "micron statistics".

Sounds like this post is all about engine "Longevity" Right? well Per SAE I believe it is all about using proper weight FULL synthetic oil after breakin Engine wear is virtually eliminated making filter micron rating much less stressful. I got 26 years and going on my Honda HRR216 GCV160 engine it does not even have a filter so relax a little but yeah you are right
