No pull starter (Ratchet)

Any tried one of these type starter? Wind the spring up and hit the release type. My 12 hp B&S has got to strong for me to pull. They run 60 to 150$ on ebay. I remember them way back on some lawn mowers.

It helps to know the numbers off the engine starter head or the valve cover.

How old is your mower engine?

If the one you are referring to had the wind-up top style with the folding handle, you are talking back in the 70's and 80's on the old flat head 3.5HP engines. Even then it was a short-lived option, and customers did not want to pay for "extras".

Never seen a wind up on a 12HP (I have not seen everything though)

I don't know of any such starter made for newer engines.

Can the engine be refitted with electric start?
 
These things are all over ebay and some youtube. Engine cranks good, i just don't have strength to pull it over. It's on a wood splitter. You right didn't know anything existed like this till I started looking at changing to a electric starter. Lot of 1/2 in drill starter videos, my dewalt will barely turn it over. Guess I just need to hire me a helper. THANKS
 
I remember those crank up starter arms. You would wind it like a clock, close the winding arm and turn this round release deal to spin the engine over. They were all over the 3.5hp Briggs engines back in the day.

get one with a starter on it. Generally speaking, if you pull an engine over until you feel it try to push back, then pull it thru, it will often start on the first pull. We have several engines that if we just pull, we may have to do so 15 times. But if we do it like described above, it starts the first pull each time.
