Nikki Carburettor

Just voicing a negative opinion:

I have a very low hrs B&S, Intek 15.5 hp, Model 31E677, fitted with a Nikki carburettor.
Engine had not been used for a while, so carby needed a clean out of old fuel "varnish".
Imagine my astonishment, when opening the float chamber, what should be a straight forward simple system, has been complicated by a plastic disk, with all the normal parts attached but sealed to the carby using super thin "O" ring like gasket . There is one large complex gasket & one even thinner single (that seals the float system to the carby body -see below ).
Naturally I damaged the individual one - leading to uncontrolled fuel flow.

My advise - If you have the choice, get this engine with the Walbro Carby (much simpler/robust and easy to clean) 😈

Its not the cost - its the unnecessary complexity.

Sometimes reinventing the wheel, just ends up with a less efficient wheel (Nikki) 😈

YOU sir are the ONLY ONE. LOL ;) (y) Total badazz.
Sorry he is not only one. I also have repair quite a few. Even one after market where I had to resize the idle jet due a non adjustable mixture screw.

I reckon has to have a beef with something, a good mechanic can fix about anything as long he or she can get the replacement parts.

Again its not about the fixing or cost. Its about reinventing something that was just fine, especially when the reinvention adds nothing but complexity ie no benefit!

I rebuilt the darn Nikki and the engine runs great - if it ever gives me a problem, I will swop it out for Walbro 😈

In fact, there are many aftermarket parts to choose from. I usually turned to Napa and Friday Parts. Ever bought a carburetor for my 31A707. Still works well. Good value for that price. Their parts never let me down.

The Nikki single barrel carburetors are a pain, however, I can usually bring them back after cleaning and new o-ring set. They are prone to causing the engine to hydro lock when needing attention. If the original Nikki can’t be fixed, the aftermarket ones have worked well for me also.
