New to forum.
Have a 72" Hustler X-One with the Kohler Engine.

Is there an economical way to get a diagnostic tool to see what is ailing it?
Developed ratty running, changed all filters, plugs etc. Still doing it, gets worse as motor heats up
 
The long and short of it is no on the tool. And the tool if purchased doesn't come with the software for the computer which requires a dealer login to obtain. Is the engine turning on the MIL or in other words the check engine light. If it is then you may be able to do the key on -off,-on -off -on sequence to get the system to blink the trouble codes. The tiny-tune code reader for Kohler engines can be obtained relatively cheap to read codes if needed without a laptop and the Kohler software.
