My E140 started as always, then stalled after going a few feet. It would then crank but not turn over. There was fuel in the filter, checked the wires and fuse, found nothing wrong. Had a brand new JD maintenance kit so I changed the plugs and fuel and air filters. Still won’t turn over. Pulled the fuel pump off and discovered the small angled hose underneath the pump was cracked and without a hose clamp. It seems this is some sort of vacuum line (don’t know, please enlighten me) that actuates the fuel pump. For now, cleaned the hose and put black tape around it to seal up the crack. Reattached the taped up hose and once again, it runs like a Deere.

That hose is the vacuum line to the fuel pump. It must be in good shape for the pump to deliver fuel to the carburetor. Replace with a new hose. You will need to get it at your local OPE dealer. You will need the engine brand, engine model number, and engine serial number for the correct hose.

This is an engine pulse vacuum hose that operates the fuel pump diaphragm.
I find them cracked often and use 3M Black Super Weatherstrip Adhesive part # 08008 to seal up the crack.
You have to let it dry until hardened and it will not crack again in the same place.

I found that is just plain lazy and cheap. Do a proper repair beside most times the rockers are needing adjustment.
