About the Mercury outboard, if it runs you have a find.
My dad had one of these Big 10 outboards whenI was a child in the late 50's, talking about it later when I was older he said you had to face the boat away from the dock before cranking it as it didn'thave a shifter. Very heavy by todays standards but was always a powerful outboard.

The age seems about right, because my dad had a new motor back in '59 when I recall seeing one like this. By 1960 Mercury outboards such as the 60 (6hp) had twist grip throttle, thru hub exhaust, fnr gear shift, shallow water tilt/lock and were great motors. My dad bought one of these white 60's back in 1961 and we traded for a new 9.8 in 1975. Wish we had kept it.

the Bolens finally got running...but i sold it to a Bolens Collector [ i know it has a good home]
the big MTD is still here and doing its job [ the guy with the Mercury has a bagger id like to get for it]

reddragon, you sound like a real trader! It's a lot of fun usually, and I get a kick out of horse trading stuff around as well.
With regards to that ol' Merc outboard, I'm reminded of an orange 1957 Merc 60 (6hp, of course) that I had on the first boat I ever owned at the age of 10. A Lund 10' aluminum skiff, and I put lots and lots of hours on it in 5 years of ownership. To this day, the Mercs are known for their reputation as being a favorite with the folks who like to go fast on the water.:biggrin: I particularly like the sound my old (1976, I think) Merc 115 hp inline six makes at full honk..

more.........i also picked up an old Mercury outboard motor..10hp..60's i guess.....i used to work in a boat shop in the mid eighties ...and these were ancient then....but runs!....maybe one of you old fisherman can tell me more:smile:

Your Merc reminds me of a similar vintage Mercury Mark 10H that I bought from a guy in Wilmington, NC in the mid 60's. He had rebuilt it with a Quicksilver lower end, racing prop, and roller and needle bearings throughout. It would run at 10,000 RPM all day long. I built a little 3 point hydoplane and it would fly with that motor on it. Probably 40-50MPH. It was fast that close to the water!
