Mole problem

A little off the subject of lawn mowers but I have a mole that is ripping my lawn to pieces. I would really appreciate advice from the members of the forum on how I can rid of this furry terminator?
Great to be part of the forum and looking forward to some advice.
Thanks
Peter

The most effective method I've ever used involved a spotlight and a 16 gauge shotgun. That may be inappropriate for your locality. Generally, if you eliminate their food source, grubs, they'll move on. It may take up to a year, but that is the second most effective method; starving them out.

I have heard numerous times an old wives tale regarding moles, they say to dig a hole in thier trenches and put a stick of Juicy fruit gum in the hole and cover it doing it in different places, apparently they like the smell but there is something in it that messes up thier digestive system and kills them whne they eat it, might be worth the price of a pack of gum to try it,

you can take and cut up some peices of barbed wire and stick at different places in their tunnels. usually at the end where they stop tunneling. if they prick themselves they will bleed to death. easy enough if you have some old barbed wire layin around. good luck

I did a quick Google search and found this along with many other products that supposedly get rid of moles - Mole Repellent Lawn Treatment £6.95

Maybe worth a try!

Hey im a golf course super and am no stranger to gettin rid of moles. There is a great product called Talaprid, its a poison in the form of gummy worm bait and very easy to use, simply stick a fat screw driver down into the most active part of the moles run and feed the bait down into it, do this every few feet and rest assured you'll be mole free in a few days. If you go with this solution please read the instructions for yourself and pay close attention to the MSDS info because it is POISON (if you have pets or small courious children you may want to consider option 2) Buy a Mole trap, most hardware stores have these, follow the instructions as to how to laod it and watch your fingers cause mole traps pack a serious punch. The trick is all in how you set it and where you set it in the run. Place the trap in a long straight active section of the moles run, You will have to cut a small section of the run out in order to properly set the trap, save this section of removed turf to cover the trap up after you have gotten it into position, be sure to cover it well so no light can enter the moles tunnel because the light will scare the mole into rerouting his tunnel.
Moles are smarter than you might think stick with it

Am a Head Greenkeeper and have had problems with moles on my course last few years. The best solution is to use barrel traps. Most humane and effective way to get rid of moles. You have to set the trap in one of its runs as it passes the spring loaded device will crush the mole. I have caught over a 100 moles using them in the last couple of years. Hope this helps

My Jack russell terrier takes care of moles in my yard right quick. She sniffs them out and digs them up. She also takes care of possums and raccoons who stay away now from her food bowl. She has killed raccoons that were twice her size. The possums play dead (bad idea) but she goes for the jugular anyway. Non toxic approach to get rid of vermin.

Jack Russell terriers are a Lot of fun ... and will go after anything, size is never a consideration...
If they were more 'cat tolerant', I would have one... but I would not be good for the cats.... :smile:KennyV

A labrador retriever and or a jack russell get the job done.

Traps work but u will need to get several of them. There are usually about 3 moles u will have to catch by the way

Moles are big problem here. I mainly dislike them because the hills stick up and dull the blades. If you want them to move (maybe to an adjacent weedy lot) try flattening their hills by running over them with the tractor tires. This is not the final solution.

Must be something about Washington that moles like. Gregoire ??
Anyway, I'm in Kitsap County and I've been trapping the little beasts since about 1988. I've been using the scissor type spring traps exclusively. In that time I have a total of 299 KIA's.
I will never run-out of moles as I'm surrounded by woods and pastures and that's where they come from even though I completely wipe-out my resident population every year.

Rich, I know I'm in the minority. These buggers leave mounds of pulverized soil which weeds and swamp grass grows in. Also they like to seek out the bowls of newly planted trees and create drain pipes. Probably old age but I can't kill 'em. The poor things are so ugly only a mommy mole could love 'em. Cats don't seem to hunt them and will not eat them. People are driven mad trying to eradicate them. They're like coyotes and cockraoches. When we're all gone...Motoman
