Misfire

More common than not is a fuel related issue.... Never assume your fuel storage can is perfectly clean inside. These problems often start at the fuel can and eventually end up in the fuel tank most of the time
Wow another person on here realizing the trash in the fuel can phenomenon. Been talking about fuel can spouts for a while. Not many comments on it. Nice......... (y)
 
If your fuel is over 6-months old (even with stabilizer) it needs to be sucked out and put in your vehicle gas tank.
Okay I disagree with this one. I put all suspect fuel in the 5 gallon bucket. This bucket houses used motor oil and fuels. Spray it on your stockade fence keeping the wood like new. Great way to recycle.
 
I will definitely report back on what I find the problem is. I still suspect ignition coil(s), though some the replies point to water in the gas. This could be the case as the gas jug was left outside as I used it for my snowblower over the winter.

The first 1 acre lawn I mowed this spring used some of the gas and the mower ran fine, but for the second lawn I emptied the remainder of the jug into it which may have contained some water. Still doesn't explain why it takes over 1/2 hour of heating up before trouble starts. Maybe it's the water sloshing due to hills.

About losing power; I know it's not putting out 100% as when I engage the electric clutch for the blades, it putt-putts for while before getting up to speed, even when it hasn't warmed up yet. Did do that until this second round of gas.

It's fixed... finally. Earlier this past week I cleaned out the fuel tank and added new fuel plus a little alcohol to absorb any water I missed. No change. Same thing as before; after about 45 minutes it started those really loud misfires(like shotgun blasts).

Then I ordered some parts and of course it rained. Today I installed them and it seemed perfect. I didn't geta chance to run it very long, however now when I engage the electric clutch for the blades, it grabs quickly with no more of that putt-putting as it works itself up to speed. Power is back.

So what did I replace? Both ignition coils and spark-plugs. Now I've replaced ignition coils on this machine before but never had the misfires sound like really bad backfires, hence my original post.

Even though the old coils and plugs weren't that old, they do look in rough shape;

Another reason to test spark with an open gap type spark tester. You can open the gap up and stress the coil out. Light bulb types you can't.

Looking at your coils, I would of started with polishing the area where the screws go and the pads where the coils sit. Coils need a good ground to work.

Those plugs look good for a mower engine.

The light bulb type testers are handy when dealing with heat failing coils, and are visible in bright light making them easy to see when the fail while you are mowing your yard with the customer mower for testing purposes.
