A couple years ago I rebuilt the rear drive on my toro super recycler. The drive washers and key etc., were somewhat worn. What caused it to fail at that point was I lubed the zerk fittings at the rear wheel and the grease was enough that the drive on one side died. It is time to lube them again. I'd rather lube them thru the zerk than pull it apart again but I can if need be. How much grease, are those of you who lube Toro recyclers, using?

Grease it until it comes out the seal.
 
Never grease it until in comes out the seal. Only thing this will do is attract dirt and hold it against the bearings and gears, causing premature failure. I’ve always recommend one pump, once a year. Recommend you you clean everything and start over, if you feel you have overloaded the gears with grease.
 
I'd pull the rear trans apart. Some Diesel and an old paint brush. Clean off and out, all the old dead grease that has dried out over the decades. Refill with Snapper 00 grade grease. It's a pudding like consistency. Heavy enough not to run out but liquid enough to flow back to the gears. Works great on Snapper's.

Typical number 2 wheel bearing grease will just sit there and not lube anything. Not enough heat generated to thin this heavy grease down to flow and protect anything.

Tractor Supply has 00 grade grease for like 7 bucks a quart.

Thank you. I went thru the back axle and wheels in April of 2023 so the grease is only 3 years old. I was trying to avoid the extra work by just zerking it, but yes, it is probably just better to do it again and get rid of the dirt and moisture too. Nothing should be worn out this time so the cost is just a few pennies worth of grease. Think I used Castrol HD wheel bearing grease last time to do them and the pinion and ring gear too. The wheels are worn out after 20 years of use. Got a new set from Toro for this time. Expensive but we cannot buy new gasoline mowers here so one has to keep what they have going. It is a great mower for our lawns, only abour 1400 sq ft of lawn. Nothing like what a lot of you have to mow.

Dog, that 20055 super recic was one of the best mowers Toro has made. Al-u'-min-i-um deck as the Britt's say. Light weight and easy to turn around. Personal Pace can't be beat.

My pops had one that was cherry. Looked brand new after 20 plus years of mowing. Valve seat sprung out of the block. I threw a long block on her and like an idiot, sold her off. Yes it was one of those great 0-turn pushers I wish I never sold.

Keep throwing money at this one. She is a keeper. You can't go to any store now and find near this quality as you know.
 
yes, it is a great mower. I've got parts to do a full carb rebuild on it, and will check the seats and valves. I suspect the biggest issue will be wear on the valve guides, and I will have to decide whether to put in new guides or run it 'till it is done. Probably between 450 - 600 hours on it. Not using oil so I don't know what it may or may not need. Might set a full overhaul aside until next winter if the guides are worn out. When the guides wear out, a valve won't seat properly each time. That wears things even faster, including seats. Wish I had access to an automotive machine shop with the equipment I am familar with. Could do a class restore on it.

I realize that greasing until grease comes out of the seal is not ideal. However, it is much better than a couple of pumps and walking away. Period
