Lawn mower battery struggles

I have no less than four battery chargers (diffrent amp's). All of them go to trickle/standby charge, once the battery gets fully toped up.
I never leave my batteries on charge for more than 48 hrs - usually just overnight.
I get cranky if a battery only lasts 5 years - my best to date was 9 years. 😈

Battery Tender brand has been out for decades. Only brand of charger I trust. None have failed me yet knock on wood.

I prefer the Battery MINDER model 121171C. It has red/green idiot lights that actually work.
I use them on lawn tractor and stored automotive batteries.

Been using them for several years and not one complaint.

One thing that will ruin a Lawn tractor battery really fast, even a new one is charging at too many amps at too fast a rate.
Even the type of Automatic chargers that go to trickle or low rate will ruin a lawn tractor battery if the rate of charge is high enough and long enough that especially if the battery produces heat.

Not trying to argue but if you charge or not charge, we are doing damage or possible damage either way.
 
When I had mine up north, I did not do anything to the battery and left it hooked up. I did do other things for the winter, but not to the battery. My original JD battery lasted about 8 years. Now I am down in Florida, I use the tractor year round.
 
I bought a 10 amp battery charger in 2022 it cost me about $20 so what I do I will charge the battery a couple hours before I'm about to cut the lawn and when I go outside to cut the grass I always have plenty of charge I am not going to spend $90 for a brand new 12-volt battery for a riding lawn mower. Works for me every time.

I have been using a NOCO Genius 1 for all of my batteries...Rider, 3 Jeeps and several 'extra' batteries that I keep for backups.
You can select 6 or 12 v and a variety of the different technologies. Some of my batteries are wet cell, some AGM, etc.
Noco will analyze the battery condition and go through a charging sequence and finally ends up at a low amp maintenance cycle.

I have an older Schumacher 10 amp/2 amp charger. It's fairly large. It does a great job and has an automatic shut off. However, I felt that a Battery Tender Jr. would be a better unit for maintaining my mower battery. The OEM battery for my Gravely is 5 years old and it fires the mower every time.

Ive been using the same charger on side by side, mower and collector car that’s not driven regularly. I wire up a pig tail so easy plug and play. Seems like an upgrade to the Battery Tender which I used to run.

i quit buying batteries three years ago. I just got one of those jump starters that fits in your pocket. Cost 30 bucks and I can use it for other things too. Every time I mow I just hook it to the posts, crank it up, and never worry about a battery again.
