Laser Z E-series gas gauge

Just bought mower a week ago. We love the mower. It's a monster.

One problem tho -- we have filled it all the way up with fuel probably 6 times -- but the gas gauge never goes over 3/4 full. Can this be adjusted or does this gauge need replacement?
 
It reads about 1/4 tank when 5 gallons low. Tank is reported to be 9.5 gallons.

It ran out of fuel a few times but I don't recall the gauge reading. I sure don't trust it.
 
It sounds like the tank sender needs to be pulled out and tested manually. According to what I found online for the part, this has a linear slide sending unit.

Remove the sender unit then connect the wire harness to it and slide the float up and down slowly the center rail while watching the gauge.

If the gauge still does not go to full, then the gauge would be suspect.
