Kawasaki FD501 won't start

John Deere LX 279 with a Kawasaki FD501 engine will not start. Both plugs have a spark, it's getting fuel and both cylinders have 160 psi of compression. It backfires when I try to start it.

Adjust the valves

Also the flywheel key.....maybe timing out...

Thanks, I'll adjust the valves and if that doesn't do it I'll take a look at the flywheel.
