I know this is a Briggs thread but I just information. I have a 13 hp Honda that has no fire to the plug. I replaced the ignition coil and still no fire . Does the one wire from the ignition coil have to be energized for the coil to generate a spark. What makes the coil fire the spark to the plug. Thanks for any suggestions

:welcome:

The single wire is a control ground wire.
If you have accidentally put 12V into that wire then you have fried the control chip that is inside the coil, which is why they are now called modules and cost 10 times as much.
They are basically a 1 pole permanent magnet generator .
They generate their own electricity for the spark.
The chip inside measures the rising voltage being generated then at a predetermined voltage trips to fire the plug.
This is called the Hall effect
Most "modules" now days are also a transformer and there is actually 2 sets of wire coils.
Pull your old dead way apart and have a look.

The single black wire grounds to kill the spark.
You test the coil by disconnecting that wire then check for a spark.
