I'm looking to buy a 54" zero turn and have pretty much narrowed it down to a JD z525e or a Hustler Raptor SD. Which one would you recommend and why?

A neighbor on the adjacent corner has a deere. I used his a couple of times doing his yard when he was off. I removed that one from the list early on. Went with the RSD60. I run it wide open.

Cut is great, most sensitive sticks out there. The RSD60 has a great seat, widest tires to keep from cutting up your sod. Love the engine guard on the RSD, strong enough to run wide open backwards into something and not worry about the heads being slammed.

Either should do just fine. I learned that jumping, removing and replacing the battery in a Deere is a pain, so is the oil change. But then, so it is on the RSD unless you change out the drain plug with a 3/8" barbed connector they both are a pain.

Good luck with your choice.

Firstly it will depend upon what type of grass you have what your block is like and which mower you feel most comfortable in.
As to the quality of the actual machines go to both the John Deere section and search Z525 then go to the Hustler section and search Raptor SD.
People usually only ever post on a forum if they are having a problem so the one with the most posts is likely to cause you the most grief.
Asking A or B will simply generate peoples personnal prefferences and not necessarily an objective opinion.
I do not see any Hustlers down here full stop but have 1 customer with a 525 and he is really happy with it.
I service it an it has only ever had standard routine service parts replaced.
As previously reported oil changes & filter changes are a pain as is valve lash adjustment & I can only guess that it was originally designed around a different engine as everything else is so well designed for ease of access & service right down to all bolts being the same size and the deck height pin having a spannar incorperated in it and a pair of ears pinched in so it does not fall out nor need a linch pin to hold it in place.
