And good that it was a cheap ( definately not easy ) repair .
 
Since your fuel filter is before your fuel pump in this system, the filter won’t always be full because the pump is drawing through it, not pushing fuel into it. Gas can gravity flow while the machine is sitting thus filling the filter, but when the engine is running, the filter may appear empty. This is not abnormal as the pump is drawing through the filter. Sounds like you still have a flow issue somewhere though.
