With an OHV ( over head valve ) engine the least expensive and often the most productive procedure is to adjust the valves, especially if that has never been done. This is after battery cable ends and posts have been cleaned until they shine.

The John Deere L110 has a Kohler Command single cylinder model CV491 which you will find has nonadjustable hydraulic valve lifters. I would think more about the battery post and cables.
