I have a 345 JD with a 20hp liquid cooled engine Kawasaki. The other day I was mowing for the first time this season when the motor started to make a loud ratting sound and just died. I tried to restart and all it does is rattle and puffs out blue smoke from the exhaust and will not start. I have always changed the oil and the motor does not use any oil. It has 800+ hrs on the engine. Any idea where to start to check I am going to repair it myself if possible . The local JD Dealer said a short block costs around $2400. I was told that since it did not lock up that it might be something in the top of the engine like a valve. Does any one know if this engine might have a cam chain ? I thought maybe this could be the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

OK , good news I went out a couple days later to check the mower out a little further and I tried to start it .It started right up and ran great, I shut it off and checked the oil level it was just a hair above the full mark so I removed some and it is running great . I have ran it around 3 hrs that afternoon with no issue's. Maybe it was just to full of oil ? Thanks for all the help.
