John Deere 210 won't start/ stay running

Hello all,
This was my original thread posted several weeks ago and someone suggested cleaning the carb bowl I have now done that and it still is the exact same problem, please help.

I have an old John Deere 210 that I got from an ffa auction. When I got it, it ran and I was able to drive it on and off the trailer. Since we had no room at our house, we took it originally to someone else's house to hold it for us for a wile. Then when we picked it up from there it ran, but when we finally got it home, it wouldn't start. I replaced the plug and same thing. I was able to spray engine starting fluid in to the combustion chamber behind the plug. It started to start but then nothing. Im pretty shire that it is getting spark because it will kind of start with the fluid in but it just wont stay running. Is it just not getting fuel? Because I know there is gas in the tank. Please help

I don't know that I have an answer for you but i have one doing about the same problem.

A friend of mune was using it with the rotoray tiller. He said he shut it off and parked it when he went to restart it it would not start.

It has a sequance that you have to do with the choke and throttle to get it to start. I went to his house and attempted to start it and coud not get it to crank. I sprayed starter fluid in it and it started but it dies as soon as the starter fluid burns out. So I determined its not getting fuel. I took the fuel line off at the in side of the fuel pump to check and see if it was getting fuel to there. Fuel flows out of the line. I reattached it to the fuel pump. I then removed the fuel line from the out side of the fuel pump and there is no fuel pumping out when spinning the engine over. I purchased a fuel pump from ebay that was advertised as a good pump installed it but it still does not pump fuel when turning the engine over.

Sounds like a fuel problem. There are several reasons an engine is not getting the fuel it needs to start & run properly. Here are a few of those reasons: clogged fuel filter/line, stuck closed float needle, plugged main jet, air leak between carburetor and engine. What have you checked so far?

Did you try spraying starting fluid directly into the carburetor intake (filter removed) and then tried starting the engine?

Hello all and thank you for posting.
Yes it is a fuel problem. the reason mine wouldn't start/ stay running was because the float-needle valve in the carburator was sticking caused by old gas and having it sit for a while. to the man who posted about his; I thing that on some engines (correct me if im wrong) the fuel pump does not pump while just turning the engine over, it accually needs to be running. Here are some things to try:
- reinstall the old or new pump and feed a hose from the top of the pump into a gas can and start it with the either. If wanting to test further, though it isn't recomended, put gas into a spray bottle, take the air filter off, and spray gas into the carburator to keep it running. if it is pumping gas, check the carburator, if it isn't, the pump is bad.
- if you don't want to do that, remove the hose from the top of the fuel pump and loosen the screws (enough that the pump moves abit) and juist move it up and down. if it is good, it should really fling the gas out of there, (at lease thats what mine did) if not, nothing will hapen.
- if you then find that the pump is good, take off the carburator bowl, and clean it with carburator cleaner (it usually comes in a spray) then look at the float-needle valve and make shure it is also working properly. Spray that with carb cleaner either way. if it is stuck tru to pull it out ans pray it untill it moves freely. also, make shure to spray all of the little valves and holes in the carburator because these can also get clogged.
If some one else is reading through this thread and still has a problem, some newer engines also have an electric shut off on the the carburator. These are usually only seen in desil engines but are also on some newer gas engines, make shure that this is also working properly.
