Hey all, looking for advice.

I have never driven a ride on mower in my life. I recently moved and have about 1.7 acres to mow. I’m looking for something that’s easy to operate, won’t break the bank, and is reliable. I know zero turns are “better” but I don’t want to break the bank quite yet and for my sized yard I’m hoping a ride on will be okay.

I came across this for sale on Facebook and I’m wondering everyone’s thoughts. I like that it comes with a snow plow too, as I have a long driveway.

Is this priced right? Should I negotiate lower? Is this a good mower for me? Thank you all!

The X350 is currently one of their premier riders. A lot of this comes down to if the owner has service records other than "I changed the oil".

I would be skeptical and ask the PIN number off of the factory label to determine what year it was built. JD has serial number breaks to distinguish early models versus the newest model.

The hour meter equates to 824 miles of run time calculated, that is not terrible if it has been properly maintained.

I would beware of Facebook and make sure you can personally inspect the rider.

If it is a 3rd party sale, walk away because it could be a scam.

If they are asking near 50% of new pricing, they are dreaming. The market on used equipment is very volatile, so I recommend have an actual mechanic look at it with you.

Never be lured in by the cosmetic appeal. The seat is well worn, and the pictures were taken with the machine wet like it was in the rain or just washed down.

The hitch hole looks enlarged like they have been pulling a trailer quite a bit.

What is the asking price?
 
For 7000 m², a ride-on mower like the John Deere D170 can do the job perfectly well without immediately switching to a zero-turn mower. It's a simple, fairly reliable, and easy-to-use model, especially for beginners, and the snow blade is a real bonus. The price depends mainly on the condition, so yes, always try to negotiate a bit.

It SEEMS like a good deal - especially at that price, BUT the seat wear tells me it has many hours on it. You may be better off in the long run to crack the bank a bit and go new. I have a 4 yr. old JD X-370 and I love it, but paid 6K for it with all the bells and whistles. It comes with hydraulic lift and power steering standard. If you don't want to drop that much $, then there are lesser mowers in various brands, but I'd go with something new and at a lower price point. 1.7 acres is a pretty righteous size area, so you might also want a larger deck than 42". I wouldn't bit on the JD on Facebook. Seat worn like that is a huge tell!
 
I would go with a Husqvarna 48" or 54" riding mower in your case. They hold their value almost as well as John Deere, are cheap and easy to maintain, and parts are very easy to find if something breaks or needs replaced. Avoid Kohler Courage engines, Briggs V-Twins and Kohler 7000 series are good, but a Kawasaki FR651v/FR691v engine would be golden. Make sure it doesn't have a black transmission if you look under the mower by the wheels, they are plastic, and don't last very long. If you are on a mostly flat property, any metal transmission will work.
