Interior House Paint Costs Any Lawn or Garden Pros Have Insights?

Hey everyone,

Not exactly mower related, but I’m working on a larger home project and figured this knowledgeable group might help.

I’m planning to paint the interior of my house (about 2,000 sq ft) and wondering what a fair cost is for materials plus hiring pros versus DIY.

I know you all deal with equipment costs, labor, and project budgeting for lawns and gear, maybe the same principles apply here.

What have you paid recently or what would you expect for paint, prep, and labor?

Any tips on tools or budgeting would be appreciated.

Average cost for a job like you're asking, for a pro will charge you $5k - $8k +/-, depending on paint costs and particulars of the area being painted.
 
A few years ago, I got bids for interior painting- not including pre-paint washing of walls & ceilings.
For ceiling flat, walls stain and trim semi-gloss, it averaged about $150.00 per 100 square feet of surface with reasonable quality paint. (PPG Manor Hall or Sherwin Williams Duration. Neither primed) More Trim in the Room = More Cost.

The bid range was very wide, so be sure to get several bids.

Decision?
Prep, prime and paint myself as time permitted. Cost = 11.5 cents per square foot for primer & paint.
But how valuable & how plentiful is your time? It may be worth subbing the job out.
 
Unless you are in an economically depressed area you won't find a good painter with materisls at $1.50 per sf.

Post covid, and depending on your area, and the quality of the painter, about $2.50 - $3.50 per sf of room area measured on the floor, is going to be more like it.

Be careful because there's always somebody cheap who might throw paint at your walls. With painters you often get more if you pay more, but not always. References are essential.

Hire. Only. On. Word-of-mouth. Referral / Recommendation…. $eriously canNOT $tre$$ this enough.

If you don’t have a neighbors association or network you need to be the one who starts some manner by which actual customers can provide one another with actual experiences with the few diamonds vs the many t@rds …

As mentioned upthread, house painting - and particularly interior - is definitely one area where perhaps more than most others, one is gonna get what one pays for (or does not).

Comments seem to focus on the price of paint.

My experience is that prep needs and the quality of the prep work is where the painters' cost vary. I assume you are painting drywall or plaster - both imperfect surfaces. Joint cracks, tape and corner bead needs to be repaired properly.

Your need for perfection also varies. Shine a light down any drywall surface ask yourself, what should be fixed. The higher the gloss, the more imperfection you will see.

For trim, do you want all past drips and caulk removed? I have a painter that I trust and pay by the hour.
