I can't get this thing oooooffffff!!!!

No matter what I do I can't seem to get this dang keyed shaft and pulleys off. I can't find anyone with a bearing breaker or I'd dry that. The gear puller is pushing so hard it's bending the pulleys, and I'm worried about how hard it's pushing the crankshaft in. Am I going to have to cut this thing off?!

Have you tried applying small increments of heat with a rosebud torch? Another idea is to PB blast or WD-40 the heck out of it then find a way to hang it in the air by the pulley and wait and allow gravity and the weight of the engine to make it fall off. If you do hang it up, only hang it high enough to allow clearance for the pulley to fall off. You don't want to hang it 6 feet in the air from a tree and allow it to come crashing to the ground and destroy something. Good luck!!

You have already destroyed it... so if you get a cut off wheel and slice it lengthwise you will lose nothing.
You should not pull on the pulleys, but I guess you have noticed that... also unless you are bolting something to the block, you are Not "pushing the crankshaft in"
What is a "bearing breaker"...?
You Could have used one of these: A Split Bearing Separator And Puller Set....: Bearing Separator and Puller Set
But, with the damage to the pulley set, just cut it off... :smile:KennyV

Heh, thanks for the replies guys. My intention was never to save the shaft and pulleys, only to gain access to the bottom of the crankshaft where I'll slide a single pulley onto it.

I would try the hanging trick but I have a bad feeling with the way my luck goes I'll either have to heat it or cut it. If I heat it I need to be sure not to overheat the crankshaft. Cutting, be sure not to cut into it. Either way I'm in for a ton of fun. lol

Forget about hanging it. PLace the engine block on saw horses or a couple cement blocks that are high enough off the ground to hang about 10 pounds of weigh off the pulleys. Lube it really good then walk away and forget about it for a few hours or overnight. You might just be surprised to go back and find the pulley laying on the ground. Seen it done before! :wink:

A similar problem along that stuck pulley subject is stuck wheels on the axle shafts! Do yourself a favor while you still can. When your riding mower is sitting in the garage or on the driveway, jack it up and take off the rear wheels and clean and grease the shafts as well as the inside of the wheel hubs. You've never seen trouble till you try to get a stuck wheel off the transaxle shaft! I've seen them stuck so hard they've welded themselves together. Neither heat, nor pressure, nor sledge hammer will budge them. Just have to sacrifice the rear end, or an axle if you can split the case. At the shop where I worked we've had to put whole new rear ends in because of wheels stuck on axles!! A little dab of grease here and there over the years would have saved a transaxle replacement. Either way it's a PAIN in the AXLE!!

Well, if it's worse than getting this pulley off than I want no part of it, lol Will go ahead and grease everything down.

I guess I may as well give the weight trick a try. Considering how long it's going to take for me to source a cutting wheel and supplies I may as well give it a pull overnight and see if I get lucky. (not what I'm known for) lol

Rock, Besides the force of gravity try a SOFT hammer (brass, copper , lead) after soaking with PB or liquid wrench. Tap gently all 'round the pulley in both directions , including ONTO the shaft. Such force can break some corrosion loose, and allow more cutting fluid into the next layer of corrosion. Make this a daily ritual along with praying. :thumbsup:

I had the same problem, but my crank was toast and I cut the crankshaft to get the pulley off.
I don't think you will get them to separate!

The bolt should be almost 1/2 way in the pulley,(pic 1,2) so cut it vertically
there(pic 3). (In half) Then cut it horizontally with the key up(pic 4).
Pulley only!

Daaaaaang! Yeah, that's what we're looking like on my end. I went and bought this mower when others said fix the 8HP one that it's replacing so there's no way I can ruin the thing, i must not fail! lol
