Clean the starter bendix then lubricate it. Only certain lubricants can be used as many will gum up the bendix and make the problem worse. I use graphite lube in an aerosol can. Works great for me.

You might have a broken ring gear on the flywheel. I had the exact same thing happen this summer. The starter would spin but it would not engage the broken ring gear and would not start. Pull the cover off the engine and check. It should be pretty obvious if the ring gear is broken. BTW mine has the Kohler Courage engine.
