i found that there isn't any parts available for this transaxle. has anyone swapped in a different axle?

Yeah, DON'T give up so easily, as Blaz stated, find the model / serial numbers on ur transaxle, there's a chance it's out there ...

I believe he has the General Transmission in his mower. Some of the 800 series have replaceable axle seals.
