My friend has been looking for a replacement motor and can only find a 24 hp Briggs that looks the same as the old one, would this work as an exact replacement? Thanks in advance.

Generally you don't want to go less in Horsepower.
Instead of going off looks, if he can provide the model and type numbers of the engine, me or we can look and see if or what engine replaces that engine and go from there.

We have looked for the Briggs serial number but have no clue where it is, motor is covered with dusty residue. Any ideas on where to look? Thanks

Looks like possibly an Intek, so engine model number should be on the valve cover opposite the one with the fuel pump.

Hey, thanks so much, I will hang on to that info.

He needs to measure the PTO shaft diameter & Length
Instructions are on Small Engine Warehouse web page
Nothing else is important if you are staying within the same brands as alternators , Carbs & engine controls will all swap over if need be.
However you can get caught with the oil filter fouling on the side rails when swapping from one brand to another .
I have an Ariens Zoom in the workshop right now looking for an engine with a swept back or hang down oil filter because none of the poke out ones will fit.

I would not much lower on HP. Briggs does indicate they have a 27 hp carburated engine or you might can go with the 28 hp EFI engine but having the model and type numbers off the old would help.

Note: On some rocker cover they have been installed upside down during a valve adjustment.
