How long does a SLA battery typically last?

The typical life of any battery depends on how it is maintained. If I had to put a number to it, I would say at least 5 years with minimal charging.

Much of it depends on how often you run the machine and for how long and if the battery is kept properly charged. I don't think the Toro recycler has a stator and regulator recharge capability, and it requires a plug-in wall charger.

For my machines with batteries, I keep a solar panel charger attached to them or a motorcycle battery tender if they are in storage over the winter months.

I have found over the years that keeping the electrolyte active at a minimal (milliamp) charge will extend the life of any SLA or conventional lead acid battery with service caps on top.

When batteries are left sitting dormant without any activity for extended periods of time, they sulfate internally to a point where they can no longer be recharged.
 
If you leave it outside like 99% of people, could be 3 months to 2 years. Most don't trickle charge nor let them survive the winter in a nice warm cozy garage.

There is NO set life on batteries. Only takes one dead cell to pull the rest down. Then it's replacement time.
 
Auto Doc you are right. The Recycler does not have a stator. It requires charging from a wall charger. I am not sure how it was maintained but it seems to be ok. I wanted to get a sense of how reliable it would be going forward assuming someone charges it regularly.

Where I live a lot of people leave their machines outside. But I do not think this one was. It looks incredibly clean for being 10 yrs old. The responsible owners keep them in a shed or garage. If they do not have either then they cover it. But they are in the minority.
 
most lead acid batteries are degraded enough by 4 years to replace them. Some people consider 50 - 60% life left good. Others replace them at that point. Some consider them good until they don't work. The next door neighbor has a Toro recycler with electric start. His only charges when the charger they provide is plugged in. The battery went bad early because it was too much trouble to designate a spot near a wall socket to plug it in. And too much trouble to run an extension cord each time it needed charging.

Hello N.,

At 10 years old, I suspect the battery that is in it currently has been replaced at least once.

The most important thing to consider is the engine fires up quickly so it does not have to crank for an extended time.
