Gotta help my brother and his sons do a roof tearoff tomorrow, thankfully it's a small house, only 26X36 and two layers to remove. Enjoy spending the time with them although the pay is zero, and actually enjoy also the real work. Trouble with being retired, after a while you really don't want to get out of bed in the morning and get your rear end in gear, because you don't have a boss waiting someplace.

I have never really known anyone who enjoyed being a roofer for a living. Did have an uncle who did it for maybe ten years, he gave me some good advice about roofing:

1. ALWAYS remove any and all nails sticking up out of the roof deck as you do the tearoff work.

2. ALWAYS wear long pants and sturdy footwear, even though wearing shorts and sandals might be a lot more comfortable.

3. ALWAYS cover any and all windows and doors underneath the roof line with either a wood frame and a tarp, or with a sheet of OSB, before you begin the tearoff.

4. ALWAYS double and triple fish with those magnetic pickup tools when the job is done, because you will never locate dropped nails otherwise.

5. ALWAYS have a good supply of plastic tarps and firring strips handy before you begin the tearoff work. So many people don't realize just how fast a downpour can hit.

My own observation: Two of the most useful tools you can have during roofing are a powerful gas or electric blower, and a powerful, large capacity shop vacuum. It is amazing how much easier the cleanup work is, ESPECIALLY IN THE GUTTERS, with these two gadgets.

I've never met a roofer that didn't work his ass off every chance he gets, Down here they all have had thier brains baked.
Try and get an early start, drink a large glass of water first thing, and try and get done early.
Don't get hurt:thumbsup:

Here we go with the poopie language again.....

By that I mean, what exactly were you referencing with the letters OSB, JD? You lookin to urinate someone off again?

Twall, OSB stands for orIented strand board a type of sheathing. The roof job is a *** though turns out there are 3 layers of old stuff to tearoff and they crumble into shreds and it takes forever to clean a section up. This is the first time I have logged into LFM since I began this thead. Sent from Blackberry mobile.

KE-RIST ON A CRUTCH !!!! My most favorite sparring member here decided to pull the plug and depart LMF because of the inane rantings of Ric the P---k and his toadies!!!! HTF can the idiots here permit such stupid, senseless, worthless censorship that resulted in the departure of one of the most valued and long term contributing members of LMF.....NO, NOT ME, CRETINS !!!! I refer to Twall, he has been one of the most interesting members here. Thanks to all of you cretins, Rick the P---k, Sandbur Ranch, etc. who want to self-censor LMF because certain abbreviations and words upset you morons and those who think you are hot s---t when in truth you are tiny, worthless excuses for human beings. Well, FOOK YOU RICK THE P---K and your toady a-- kissing followers.

Buncha worthless, gutless p----- here. What a shame such an interesting and promising site has to go downhill becuz of the rantings of a few moronic a------s. Yes you know who you are.

Quite true, but isn't free speech and the right to express yourself part of what made America great?

CENSORSHIP ALWAYS COMES WITH A PRICE !!!!!!

So true....members like him are worth 500, no, make that 5,000, of some of the moronic cretins here.

Good thing you can't read the PM's between Twall and me.....some of the names we called each other wouldn't be found in any Websters...a Google search might turn up a few of them.....:thumbsup:

So here are pics of my week, tearoff 3 layers of old shingles, 42 squares total, and replace with new. Thankfully, very little roof sheathing had to be replaced in the process.

Thanks JD, for the support.

We should kinda not push the issue too far, however. The censorbot got turned down, so I am back - let's not see how far we can push it until it gets cranked back up again, okay? I know you're angry, so was I when I posted the 'goodbye' thread. I don't apologize for anything I said in it, however. Ric was supporting Sandbur on a non-issue to the point of getting the filter turned on. They ARE wimpy little PC drones who can't handle life, so they throw a hissy at everything they find (and they are always looking for an excuse to get all self-righteous, and impose their idea of morality and cleanliness on the rest of us for their own comfort).

I was plenty p----ed myself, and still am, but the caveat I gave myself was "If it gets turned down to where it won't censor anything we wouldn't censor ourselves, I'll come back". That happened, and here I am. Let's keep it as PG as we always have (without getting PC, which we NEVER have).

--EDITS--

[We already DO self-censor, and we always have. It's the forced EXTERNAL censorship that really yanks my chain. I can handle the jerks. Think I don't have language skills? You have no idea the command of the English language I have, so you can bugger yourselves with a corncob right where the sun don't shine. I am more than capable of handling your kind......]

To said jerks:

Don't go taddling to the teacher because we're having fun and you're NOT. Wanna mess with me or JD? Go ahead. We will decimate you in our own trademark styles. Try us. Just don't go whining to admin when we kick your PC a--es all over the boards.

Now you have outed yourselves as PC wusses with testes the size and consistency of Sun-Maid rasins, I look foward to your posts, should you find the intestinal fortitude to dare.....you FOOLS!

nice job JD,I'm getting flashbacks.I "helped "2 of my nephews a few yrs. back do their roofs.I started one applying tar around the edges on his porch roof while I went over the ridge on the other side looking for possible leaks.Came back over and found him sitting smack in the middle of the porch roof leaning out as far as he could trying to put that tar down.I asked him in a kind way if he was afraid of heights and he admitted he was so I got him off the roof and did it myself. The other time was another Nephew's garage I was having him carrying up bundles and he froze halfway up the ladder so I wound up carrying up 20sq. by myself and then roofing it.they both were good cleanup men on the ground but not worth a hoot up high. russ

Russ, my balance is so bad (caused by hearing loss) I have a difficult time walking a straight line on level ground in broad daylight when cold sober. Have never liked being on a ladder or a sloped roof, but there are just times you gotta cope with your fears. I admire those who can work at heights all day long, but wouldn't want to do that myself.
