If it is still covered under warranty, I would use Honda products. Don't want to void a warranty over a couple of bucks. Not under warranty, I don't see a problem.

Use of non-Honda parts won't "void your warranty." Technically and legally, nothing can void the warranty. You have a warranty when you buy the machine new, and it remains in effect for the duration specified. If a non-Honda part causes a failure or problem with the mower, repairs probably won't be covered. Generally, only failures associated with genuine Honda parts are covered under the warranty.

FYI, Honda is competitive on prices for service parts. A genuine Honda air filter for a Honda mower might only be a $1-$3 more than Brand X. If you'll share the serial number off the back of the mower, I can look up the cost of a air filter for it (note: I see the OP is from Canada, so not 100% sure I can see parts for his mower---my catalogs are USA models only).

Chris:

That unit was sold by Honda to a dealer on 3/23/2012. It was never registered as a retail sale (this happens when the original buyer does not mail in the registration card, or, if bought at a full-service dealer, the dealer does not send the sales record back to Honda).

If you have any documents that show proof of purchase, the 3-year warranty on that mower would have started on that date. If you don't have any proof, Honda would start the warranty on the day it was sold to the dealer. Either way, YES, there is some warranty time left on the unit. At least 2+ years. Warranty "stays with the mower" so it does not matter if you were the original buyer or not.

If you'll send me a PM with your name and mailing address, I'll get you into the system as the registered owner. This is important in the unlikely case there's ever a safety recall, and Honda needs to contact you.

One More Thing: I see your location is in Canada. This is a USA model, and any/all warranty work must be done at an American Honda dealer. This model's serial number won't show up in any Honda Canada systems, since it's not a Canadian model.
