I just had my John Deere 106 (2006) riding mower took to the shop because it had a blown gasket. The shop replaced gasket, the cam, crankcase gasket, and oil seal replaced. When I started it, it runs but it sounds like plastic is ticking inside the motor. The knocking gets faster as the engine runs higher. I tried to give it a test run to see if it would work itself out but after about ten minutes I could feel the mower struggling to push itself slightly and the motor started to overheat. (Of course I shut it off before any damage could be done )
Does anyone know if this is something simple or did this shop mess something up?

Take it back
Could very well be the blower housing not replaced properly which has now taken all of the fins off the fan
If you take the blower housing off to check they they can claim you put it on wrong.
Send the shop an email so you have written proof should it come to a shooting match
