Hello everyone!

I’m currently replacing the original Briggs & Stratton engine on my John Deere 155C lawn tractor. My original engine was a Briggs & Stratton 445777-0264-E1.

The replacement engine I purchased is a Briggs & Stratton 44S977-0032-G1, which appears to be equipped with a ReadyStart automatic choke system. I’m perfectly fine with using the automatic choke instead of the original manual choke setup on the original motor.

However, while inspecting the new engine, I noticed a strange metal linkage rod connected to the circular throttle control plate (the metal disk shown in my photos). This linkage is configured differently from anything on my original engine, and I’m having trouble determining its purpose.

I’ve searched extensively online, including looking through parts diagrams, engine documentation, and other discussions, but haven’t been able to find any information specifically identifying this linkage or explaining what it does. That’s ultimately why I’m reaching out here.

I’m hoping someone familiar with these newer Briggs V-twin engines can help answer a few questions:
  1. What exactly is this linkage responsible for, and what does it control?
  2. Is it associated with the ReadyStart automatic choke system, or does it serve another purpose?
  3. Is this linkage necessary for my John Deere 155C application, or can it safely be disconnected or removed?
  4. Given that my original engine used separate throttle and choke controls, are there any adjustments or modifications I should be aware of when connecting the existing throttle cable?
I’ve attached a couple of photos showing the linkage and highlighted the areas I’m referring to.

I’d rather understand how everything is supposed to function before making any changes or proceeding with the installation.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated, especially from anyone who has worked with this particular engine model or completed a similar repower.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for sending over the service manual! I appreciate you taking the time to find it.

I looked through it, but unfortunately, it doesn’t quite address what I’m trying to figure out. I’m not looking to adjust the governor, idle speed, or throttle settings.

My main question is about the specific metal linkage rod connected to the circular throttle control plate on my new 44S977-0032-G1 engine. It’s configured differently from my original 445777-0264-E1 engine, and I’m trying to understand what that particular linkage does and whether it’s necessary for my John Deere 155C application.

I’ve searched quite extensively but haven’t been able to find any documentation or diagrams that specifically identify it or call out its purpose/part number.

Quick update! I managed to find this photo from EnginesForLess showing what appears to be the exact same linkage. According to their instructions, it needs to be pulled out before connecting the throttle cable. Looks like I may have finally found my answer!

It's a shipping attachment so the throttle mechanism does not get damage in shipping.

Do not attempt to adjust the governor shaft on this new engine because that would immediately void any warranty.
