The spring loaded chute does keep it on but only if the chute doesn't start slipping off the chrome bar, which mine always does. Eventually it will fall off and if you're not paying close attention, you run it over. It's a bad design. The first one I chewed up came with the mower so it was the correct chute and the second one from Amazon was identical. As you suggest, I intend to wire or tape the next one on to the fitting so this doesn't happend again. Thanks for the advice..
Cut you a piece of tight fitting fuel line and put over each end of the shaft.

or one can use a mulching plug in the back, or a bag, and disconnect the side discharge. The side discharge gets in the way for us. They get bumped on things.

While they are a pain in the butt, be aware if the discharge deflecter is missing or tied up AND an object whether it is a rock, can, stick or other object flies out from the mower and hurts or kills someone you can be held liable. Lawyers ( I call them buzzards as they are looking for a free meal) love these cases big bucks and big paychecks.
Those delectors though a pain are supposed to be designed to deflect objects down so the don't fly too far. Of course the manufacturer has the obligation to make a product that will last and not fall off, but the operator has the responsibility to not hit things and not break it off. (not saying you hit anything) .
