Governor Part For Older Briggs Engine

Hello,

I have the following 8HP Briggs engine on my riding mower: Model 194707, Type 4526 E1. It is probably around 24-25 years old and still runs great.

I noticed today that the throttle control was not reducing power in the slow position and it seemed like the engine was over-revving on the fastest setting. I noticed a very thin piece of broken wire attached to the hole where I am pointing in the attached picture. (This is the governor control lever, and the hole is right under the black grommet) I have to assume this was some type of spring that broke, leaving just that small piece hanging. I have no idea what part it is or where the other end attaches. I have included a diagram with the governor parts and you can see the small hole on part 227 circled in red.

If anyone could point me to the right part and most importantly, what the other end connects to, that would be a huge help!

You are looking at the governor tension spring. One end attaches to the same hole as the governor link to governor arm. The other end attaches to the throttle lever in the same hole as the governor link. Very helpful - thank you! Now I just have to find a place that has the part. Have tried just about all of the usual online resources and they all say "no longer available." Wondering if there may be a workaround.
 
Thanks for the responses, everyone. As mentioned to @Rivets, I cannot find the part online, so will keep trying and possibly check local repair places.
 
I’m 99 percent sure I have your spring. I have a Murray parts mower and I think it’s a Briggs 8hp It’s possible it’s a Briggs 12 hp? I recall getting this spring and it didn’t “fix” my problem. The problem was it needed new rings as low compression and burning oil. The mower is at my farm and I’ll go end of next week with my 92 year old Dad to mow. If I have it I’ll mail it to you free.

The one in the picture is a combination linkage rod with the spring integrated with it. You can buy just the spring. Any governor return spring that is the same length will work.

Thanks so much! I have a local shop that's been around forever and they have been able to come up with old parts on occasion, so I also plan to check with them. In the meantime, if you could check to see if you have the spring, that would be great. Thanks again!
