Drain and flush your fuel tank, install all new fuel hose and filter. Make sure she is spotless all the way to the carb inlet. Good flow AT the carb inlet.

Here's another one. What type of fuel can spout do you have? Open top or a new style EPA pain in the rump to dispense spout? Middle spout is pretty good.
Open spouts let bugs, leaves, grass, dirt, grit, water and trash into your can. Then when you fill the mower tank, all that trash passes to the mower tank. Said trash passes to the carb. Think I'm the only one on here preaching about open top spouts.

Being 15 years old I will assume it is the Kohler Command engine. If so the valves are not adjustable due to using hydraulic lifters.
Problem solved! The fuel cutoff valve was almost completely clogged. Replaced it and cleaned out the tank. Runs like a champ now.
I suppose that with the limited fuel, the carb was compensating and running very lean, leading to running hot and vapor lock the fuel.
And Slomo, I checked all my cooling fins and they are actually quite clean.
And once I started looking for valve clearance specs, realized mine are hydraulic lifters, so no adjustment required. Really glad as I was feeling quilty/stupid for not ever checking them.

Removal of all the covers on this mower is quite an undertaking, so I conveniently convinced myself all is good since the portion I could see looked so good. Amazing how the lazy mind can be so convincing when…convenient.
So I hereby promise to do so…once I get my yard cut.
