FS240 clutch stuck

Stihl FS240 trying to access the clutch to check the springs, after removing all screws the two parts will not separate, the clutch seems to be seized onto the drum. The seam around the bottom two screws can wiggle a 1/8” opening, just enough to get a narrow flat head screw driver tip into the opening, but the aluminum is soft and don’t want to damage the aluminum by prying. Any tips on how to get the clutch to release? Thank you.

There is a Torx screw (believe it is a T20) that has to come out to separate the clutch.

Uhhh? When did Stihl start using a screw on the 4147 power head clutch drum.

The clutch drum come off with item 7. Now the clutch shoes item 1 is rusted up and is hanging the worn out clutch drum then it will be difficult to separate. You would somehow press out the clutch drum from item 7 after removing item 12 snap ring. Then clutch drum and clutch has to be removed which would destroy the drum at least and probably the clutch too. A pain in the backside to do.

Thank you all for the tips really appreciate it. Glad to hear not alone with the adventure of removing the housing part 7. Not sure why the clutch was stuck in the drum. Guessing it could be from both clutch springs broken and seized the clutch in the drum. I used 5 flat head screw drivers and slowly wedged and gently lifted around the part 7 edge, I did nick one of the flanges that are on the outside of the part 7, but it seems ok. Cleaned clutch well, replaced springs, reassembled… without any left over parts :ROFLMAO: and back in business. Thank you.
 
Just wait until have to replace that clutch drum as you going need a special snap ring pliers. I use to just destroy the small snap ring to get these drums but the special tool put an end to that. Just too deep of a recess for regular snap ring pliers.

The last FS90 I did those clutch shoes were actually broken.

Just note that patience is key to any repair as every one can be unique.

In this case, apparently there isn’t a Torx screw.

That is the reason you can't assume things give advice on something you never worked on yourself. Yes other MTD and a few others do have a retaining screw but not Stihl. Also that is why most of us require make and model number so the equipment can be looked up to see how it put together. For Stihl a lot the IPLs are at

Have you ever had a Stihl bush cutter locked up because of carbon? No need to even tear them down. I had several in the last few years but what carbonizing fluid is for. Even the local Stihl dealers don't carry it but AC Delco does make it.

And I do have many of repair manuals except for mowers. It will take time to find a source for those IPLs and SMs. That is thanks to the right to repair movement.
 
Hello @StarTech thank you much for the link to the IPL's wow this is a game changer! Fortunately for now the clutch drum is spinning clean and smooth, will revisit this thread when time comes to change the drum. For now FS240 machine is back battling the grass 🤣 thank you
