Did you check the exhaust to see if it is plugged with a mouse or mud dauber nest. Did you check around the blower housing to see if a mouse built a nest in there and the debris is interfering with the fan spinning? The problem you have can be caused by many things. You absolutely cannot rule things out until you check. Otherwise you will start hoping that firing the parts cannon will solve it, when in fact you may make it worse.
 
Yes the flywheel spins freely with the spark plug removed

I'll need to go through the entire checklist again from scratch.

I started the engine started twice (but was emitting white smoke both times) after some fixes two days ago. It's failed to start again since.
 
that smoke may (or may not) have been a mouse nest burning either the exhaust or inside the shroud. If a mouse got in there it could damage wiring. Sort of puzzled though why it spins completely normal with the spark plug out but acts goofy when the plug is put back in.

I worked on one for a customer a couple of years back, but I had never used one until then. It worked very well for me cutting tall grass in foot path areas and all around my 2- bay garage and storage buildings.

To me it fits between a conventional push mower and a handheld trimmer.

The thicker cutter string is bit of a pain but a pocket screwdriver and small pocket channel lock pliers make it easy.
