I was told you cannot do a compression test on these engine because of a mechanical compression release,is there a way of finding out about this and how would do a compression test?

You can still do a compression test, but the release may effect the reading you get. Like you may get 70 instead of 130, or 90 instead of 150.

well its a older engine 1988 walk behind with plenty of hours and it isn't running so well when blades are engaged,so its old enough to be worn out seeing it was used on many, many lawns. I bought another engine so I wanted to test it, the one I have now reads 33lbs and it needs around 60 ro run ,now how good at 60 is not known to me.
