EZT Fluid Change

I want to "drain" oil in my Gravely Z50 with EZT drives...........without pulling units off, how successful will pumping the fluid out with a pump from the fill plug? Will I be able to get most all the fluid out this way, short of disassembling the units?

The rest of the story. I was able to pump out a little over a quart per side, turned the frame over and drained what looked to be about a cup's worth per side out. Using two hoist I tilted the frame with the units still bolted in place.

I quart of oil per transaxle sounds rather low to me, in general.
 
They hold 56 ounces each side. That is just shy by a cup of two quarts. Now of course some oil is trapped in the two motors in each unit that can't be drain easily even on an open unit

Hard to believe the gearboxes were that low...almost a quart/per gearbox. I caught all the oil in a drain pan and put it in a measured container. I tilted the units over night in both directions to be sure all the oil was drained so I know how much came out of the units. I did notice that the vents were clogged up to the point it took a small wire to break free the dirt. That may be why the units were so low below spec capacity.

You remove the fill port fitting then using a measuring stick that is marked at 2 inches. Insert until the 2 inch is even with the fill hole There should be at least a half inch of oil on the stick.

Item #7 is the fill port that is remove with a 1/4 or 5/16 hex bit. Depending on the equipment this may not be accessible.

Thanks for the help.............getting to the plug is tight but that's a good idea....appreciate the help. bartles
 
Truth be told in this situation, you never will get the full measure of oil out of these as if they were dry. There are pockets, cavities and hydraulic piston assemblies that will all retain a small amount of oil in them.

Don't be alarmed because this is natural due to design.

Top the units off and purge the air with the wheel off the ground and cycle the motors forward and reverse several times. I usually let a unit it for about an hour and then repeat. This makes sure any trapped air in the oil has a chance to escape.
