When I bought my mower, I also decided to buy a cheap electric strimmer to go with it (same as this - http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.j...mmer&fh_eds=ß&fh_refview=search&isSearch=true), as my Black & Decker strimmer (same as this - BLACK & DECKER STRIMMER GRASS AND WEED TRIMMER | eBay UK) had been making an awful groaning noise coming from the motor when in use.

I didn't think that noise was normal, and after using the new one, which was almost silent, I confirmed it wasn't normal!

Don't get me wrong, I love the B&Q strimmer, but I would like to get my once expencive Black & Decker back in use too, but I hate using it due to the noise, and the vibrations it creates (perhaps that is from the same problem as the noise ?)

I'm pretty sure the groaning is the bearing that connects the motor to the spool ?

If so, can I oil it, or does it need replaced ?

I'm not afraid of a bit of hard work, and will strip it down if necessary.

Thank you in advance guys.

Strimmer! Great word. We call them string trimmers here, but I'm using "strimmer" from now on and I don't give a crap who gets hurt.

Try oiling that bearing first, but you may have a bent motor shaft on your hands. If that's the case, just use it until it explodes and be happy for the good times you had together.

hi Jetblast

Yes that could be possibly you might have gotten some dirt or grass clipping into that bearing and try oiling might work it might be a sealed bearing and not do any good but it worth a try.You might try spraying some wd-40 into the bearing and see if that helps, might have to take a guard off to do this. Oil would last a lot longer then wd-40 i think try them booth if you want, if that don't work you might have to take it apart and see if there is a bearing number on it and look on the internet and see if you can get a new one. Do a goggle search for that number. And it could just be a sleeve and it dirty and needs cleaned and re- lube. Well good luck:licking:

I did a search on 'strimmer', and found it is usually someone from Scotland/UK/England.......hmmmmm

Is it just a nickname? Or are they called that there?

"Strimmer" is the name for it here.

Oh, I don't know if this matters, but it also has a lot of play if you pull it in and out, and from side to side.

Now THAT sounds like a shot bearing.
