Enging burning oil

Hi. We've received a Toro 20370 from a friend. He said it no longer worked so we decided to take it and attempt to fix it. We opened it up and noticed it was burning oil. Is there any other way oil is getting into the cylinder other than going passed the piston rings? The cylinder itself looks good (no scratches). Kind of a dumb question but I had to ask. Thanks
