I have a Troy Bilt tractor type mower with hydrostatic transmission. While mowing, engine began running rough and smoked. Appeared something was slowing or stopping the engine. Replaced deck bearings, idler pulley etc. Now, engine runs fine when blades are not engaged. Runs fine with blades engaged in neutral. Same problems as before when attempting to mow, engine chokes down. Any ideas?

Not SURE - sounds like Hydrostatic problems - is there a chance the Hydro filter is blocked ?

Does it move o.k. with the blades off ?? Try running it around yard with blades turned off hills are nice if you have one in yard will tell you if it's the trans. How does the deck feel remove main drive belt and turn over by hand. If it passes above could be carb or igbition related.

Drove around yard without blades . Appeared to do ok. Parked mower, engaged blades. Appeared to run ok. All bearings are new. Stalls only when driving with blades engaged.

Might sound too easy, but have you checked air filter - might be getting enough air without load and need more under load - same with fuel filter.

This isn,t your normal stalling. It feels like something is trying to physically stop the engine. Smoke pours out, engine shakes.

Had the same problem with a cub cadet 2185 once. Turned out a bearing was bad in one of the pulleys on the front just under the pto. It lugged the engine down almost to the point it stalled. It eventually flew apart throwing pieces everywhere.
Remove all belts and check every pulley. Also make sure your pto bearing is good while the belts are off.
Hope this helps
