DON'T buy the DR Trimmer

Back in the mid 1990's we spent $900 on a DR Trimmer w/the electric start. WHAT A WASTE! The electric start (which as a woman, I needed) worked a few times & then I'd have to have my husband or a neighbor start it before I could use it. And it was HEAVY so pushing it (on 34 acres of fenced pastures & house) would wear you out. DR Trimmer deserves to go broke for this stupid product.

Not every product is for everyone and everything.......: the starter issue couldn't have been repaired / replaced or warrenteed??. a lot of equipment (mowers, blowers, trimmers, snowbloweres etc.etc.) are going to have issues of one kind or another....."pushing it through 34 acres"?

I hate to break this to you, but hauling a WEEDEATER FEATHERLITE around 34 acres on foot would be a chore....as a matter of fact, just hauling YOURSELF around on foot through 34 acres would wear out even the heartiest......

As far as the starter goes, that is an ENGINE issue, NOT a DR issue.

Here I was hoping to find constructive critisism of DR....don't know much about them......instead we get this........

Sorry I read it.....so I had to post this reply.....

The more I think on this, the funnier it is.......okay, so you bought it in the 90's????? Isn't that like going on 2 DECADES AGO??? Aside from the electric start, and the fact it doesn't make you able to push it around 34 ACRES - you said someone had to start it for you - but then you USED IT (A 20 YEAR OLD MACHINE). This is all you have to say? Too funny....

I wonder if she'll be back?

If not, just as well....

There is enough unsubstantiated judgements around here as it is.......but, if she wants to go on...or God forbid, answer what I said...Bless her.

Just think about it - a 20 year old machine, and the worst reasons she can come up with to back up the strong title is the starter and it's heavy? What did she expect? Would ANYTHING be good enough?

By that post alone, I wonder if she had much to contribute here anyhow, thus the snappy comeback. It was a waste of my time to read it, so I had some fun with it.

No, we obviously did not use it to push through 34 acres. I said we had a mile of fencing, wire & wood & we used it on that & some around the pond. It was never worth a crap. The company did not stand behind it's product. We learned the hard way, I just don't want anyone else to have too.

sgvandivort... Good to see you back...
I evidentially missed your earlier post, but just got caught up so, I hope you stay with us and keep everyone up on your part of the mowing/trimming...

years age, My neighbor bought one of these type 'looks easy on TV ' Trimmer/mowers. & like you say was very hard to work with, to the point that it was only used a few times and then never again... I gave it a short run and it is definitely a good (bad) work out... :smile:KennyV

Thanks for the warning. Of course there's more data available now than there was when you purchased this machine, but there's no universal love-fest going on for the DR Trimmer. Very mixed reviews. Can you expand on the "company wouldn't stand behind their product" part of your comments? Bad customer service would drive me to warn people off of a product more than anything else.

BTW, congratulations for surviving the Lawn Mower Forum welcoming committee and coming back. You've just won the LMF Survivor Award! Unfortunately the prize is a 10% off coupon for a DR Trimmer.

Re: 5/14/11 reply - DON'T buy the DR Trimmer

Well, here's some data....
I purchased the high end self propelled model last fall. We used it for half an hour before the self propel drive chain fell off. We spent a couple hours trying to get it back on and it fell off again. We schlepped it back to the dealer, 60 miles away to fix it. We didn't get to use it the rest of the year. (Dealer couldn't get me the cutting wire.) So into the shed it went for the winter - properly stored and all. Got it out between the constant rain this spring and guess what.... half an hour into cutting it slips again. Back to the shop to be repaired. And now the bill is over $400 to fix the drive and axle, and broken wheel. 12 grand and I haven't run it an hour yet. How's that for some data. She's right, don't waste your money. I thought I was getting a quality machine for 12 grand. I could have gotten some cheap Korean trimmer and actually accomplished something.
