Does mulching create thatch?

Despite popular belief, mulching and or short clippings dropped on the lawn after mowing are not the cause of thatch buildup. There are any number of things that can cause thatch, like over fertilizing and over watering which intern makes the lawn grow excessively fast and doesn't allow for a timely breakdown of the clippings left on the lawn. People tend to water way to much and don't allow for the fact that grass clipping themselves are like 85% water. It can get real complicated if you start considering all the factors involved with thatch. Basically people make there own problems with thatch by not knowing how to manage or take care of there lawn properly.
