Deck Belt Shredding

I had one of those strange belt eating mysteries a couple years ago. The mower just didn't have that many hours, so I tried making sure everything was aligned, all the belt guards in place. It hadn't been messed with since I bought it new. Everything was as it should be. After a couple of expensive belts, I was stumped. I don't remember where the idea came from, because I'm not that bright mechanically, just a remove and replace, YouTube guy. But I bought a new spring for the tensioner. A side by side comparison would have you thinking there's absolutely no difference in the two. Same strength used to set the tension arm, same exact spring. Haven't thrown, or had a chewed up belt since.

I would check for any recalls or TSB’s. My Kubota would throw the belt if engaging at any RPM below full throttle. They modified the tensioner/guide design which I installed and has worked flawlessly with the same belt for 5 yrs mowing 3/4 acre.

The 1716854SM is a 1/2 x 90.4 belt so a 89 is definitely too short. Stens 265-975 replacement is 1/2 x 90.5.

You are just burning to belt.
